The Substance (Fargeat, 2024)

The Substance, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, where it snagged a Best Screenplay prize and was voted the People’s Choice Award for Midnight Madness at the Toronto International Film Festival, is shaping up to be one of the theatrical events of the year. In this futuristic body horror, Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore) is an aging celebrity who has been deemed past her prime. The Substance is one of the boldest films I have ever seen. Maria (Larraín, 2024)

Written by Giorgia Cattaneo Angelina Jolie looks like a living painting in this third and final act of the severely acclaimed Pablo Larraín’s biopic series – started with Jackie (2016), followed up by Spencer (2021) – delighting the world with a never-seen-before side of the greatest female opera singer, Maria Callas. Set in a 1970 Paris, Maria follows the last, tumultuous years of the soprano’s public and private life. The movie, which premiered in September at the 81st Venice International Film Festival, is soon to be officially released in theaters worldwide.
