Memoir of a Snail (2024) is one of those rare films that reaches deep into your soul, leaving you shattered yet profoundly moved. Directed by Adam Elliot, this heart-wrenching stop-motion animated film follows the melancholic Grace Puddle (Sarah Snook) as she reflects on her life, sharing her journey with her favourite companion, Sylvia, a snail.

Despite its heavy themes, the film is unexpectedly funny, with moments of dry, quirky humour woven throughout. One of the film's brightest points is Grace's friendship with Pinky (Jacki Weaver), a charmingly awkward neighbour who adds much-needed levity to the story. Pinky is more than just comic relief - she represents the importance of having someone in your life who lightens the load, who helps you laugh even when things seem dark. In many ways, Pinky reminds us how crucial it is to have someone like that in our own lives. Whether it's a friend, a family member, or a trusted confidant, having a "Pinky" by your side can make all the difference.
Memoir of a Snail offers a hopeful message: life is hard, yes, but there’s always something beautiful ahead if we’re brave enough to face it. It’s a reflection on the importance of living in the present and not letting fear hold us back. We all have a shell we feel comfortable in, but this film gently reminds us that we can’t stay hidden in it forever. There's a world waiting for us, and sometimes, the hardest part is simply stepping out.
This film will stay with you long after it ends, urging you to reflect on your own life, fears, and the beauty that lies just beyond them. It’s an emotional, soul-stirring experience, and one I won’t soon forget.
Memoir of a Snail arrives in Australian theatres on October 17, 2024 with a limited release in American theatres on October 25, 2024 followed by a wider release in November.
