If you’re in need of a simple film to bring your family to over the summer holidays, and you’ve seen the original, The Bad Guys 2 (Perifel, 2025) is in the books for you.
Though I guess you could also go see it for fun without having seen number one.
There’s nothing specific about The Bad Guys 2 that puts it ahead of other releases this year, apart from the sly messages that are hidden within and its lovely animation style. Yet sometimes all you need to do at the movies is enjoy yourself, and The Bad Guys allows you to do just that.
The Bad Guys are back, but this time they face an unlikely foe, or foes. Can the newly changed “good” guys return to their roots for one last heist to save those they hold most dear? Or will the bad girls defeat them on their quest for justice? Five years after the events of The Bad Guys (Perifel, 2022), Mr. Wolf (Sam Rockwell), Mr. Snake (Marc Maron), Mr. Shark (Craig Robinson), Mr. Piranha (Anthony Ramos), and Ms. Tarantula – the titular Bad Guys – are trying their hardest to do good. To get good, well-earned jobs and become a regular part of society. Unfortunately for them, the reputation they spent years developing as “bad” makes it considerably difficult for them to find proper employment. Instead of finding honest jobs, they somehow find themselves caught up in a new heist. Orchestrated by “The Bad Girls” – Kitty Kat (Danielle Brooks), Pigtail (Maria Bakalova), and Doom (Natasha Lyonne) – The Bad Guys must come to terms with what they need to do to protect those they love.
Taking Aaron Blabey’s illustrated graphic novel and bringing his characters into the world of film takes proper planning and precise execution to stay true to their nature. After the success of the original film back in 2022, it feels only right that writer Etan Cohen and director Pierre Perifel have joined forces again for the sequel. Proving they work well together, the two created another witty and enjoyable film for audiences of all ages. That is how they have succeeded: when it comes to a good family film, it must entertain audiences of all ages, as parents will bring children or tweens, and new adults may want to go to the cinema for fun on their own.
Villains that have human qualities are brought into The Bad Guys 2 in the form of a young group of females that can learn from The Bad Guys, but also teach their audience important life lessons as well. Even if life throws curveballs your way, what you choose to do with yourself afterwards is what truly matters. It is great to see the original cast back together in a sequel without any unnecessary changes, and the introduction of the female antagonists does well to provide the voices needed to give The Bad Girls life.
As said, though, even if you have yet to watch the original, anyone can enjoy The Bad Guys 2. Whether you need a good family film to watch with your young ones or are in the mood for something easier to watch, Perifel has created something for you.
The Bad Guys 2 released in cinemas in the UK on July 25 and is now out in the United States and Canada from August 1. If you are unable to see this film on the big screen, but eventually want a good movie night at home, be sure to watch The Bad Guys 2 to see what Wolf, Snake, Shark, Piranha, and Tarantula are up to.
