"The Naked Gun" (Schaffer, 2025) - Review

The Naked Gun is Exactly The Kind of Comedy We’ve Been Missing

If a movie is capable of making an entire movie theater of people of all ages and backgrounds laugh at the same time at every joke, it must be considered one of the best movies in recent times.

Comedies, real comedies, have been missing from the list of premiering films for a long time now. The Naked Gun (2025) is here to change the narrative and hopefully encourage filmmakers to continue creating movies like this one. We’re at a point in our lives where it is a necessity to dive into movies that will absolutely distract us from reality. This comedy does exactly that without falling into the grotesque or vulgar categories.

While remakes or reboots generally make audiences skeptical, this one proves that it’s not always a bad idea. This reboot honors its predecessor by making it the bones of the story. It is clear from the beginning that without those movies, this one wouldn’t stand. But even then, Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson create a completely new and different experience for viewers. And those who are diving into the franchise for the first time will be motivated to look back on what came before.

Neeson and Anderson have the kind of chemistry that makes viewers want to see them in several more projects together. While the two had never worked together before, their connection feels years in the making. This perfect match dynamic is exactly what comedies need out of a duo. Their bond translates into the perfect timing that is expected in a comedy. None of them misses a single beat, delivering perfectly hilarious scenes.

Anderson has been reinventing her career, reintroducing herself to the fans from the past and the viewers of the present. Her work in this film is flawless. While she still holds the sex appeal many remember her by, she isn’t afraid to act silly. Nevertheless, she takes the role seriously, delivering a memorable character that won’t be forgotten, just as a funny blonde in a movie. On the contrary, her character is silly in a serious way. In a way that makes you fall in love with her and every little thing she does, as ridiculous as it may seem.

Neeson is also reinventing himself with this role. Even though comedy seems to come easily for the actor, most viewers are used to watching him kick ass in action movies. That action nature is still very much present in this movie and the extremely over-the-top fight scenes he performs. And that recognizable tone that he once used in movies like Taken is present when his character delivers ridiculously serious monologues. The essence of this character combines the action scenery Neeson is leaving behind and the comedic genius he is introducing the world to.

The scene in which we see his character eating hot dogs and rushing into a bathroom is priceless. The delivery of this performance is spot on, reminding us that Neeson will always be at the top of his game, no matter what role he plays. Moments like those are also a reminder of the essence of the franchise: this cop who is incredibly ridiculous, messy, and over-the-top but still manages to get the job done (and get the girl).

The movie in itself is a masterclass in comedy. The timing of every joke is perfect. Every actor involved is right on the spot, proving that comedy can be taken seriously while helping viewers forget about the world around them. The coffee bit is a winner. While it feels extremely ridiculous to the viewer and pushes us to laugh, it is serious for the characters, and it makes sense within the film. After all, we all know the stereotype.

And of course, we cannot forget to mention the compilation of moments between Neeson and Anderson’s characters with the snowman. If someone had told me years ago that I would watch Liam Neeson in a movie that includes a threesome between him, Pamela Anderson, and a snowman, I would have said it was a fever dream. But lo and behold, The Naked Gun delivers, and once again, this makes perfect sense inside this universe. Don’t ask why, but we get it.

If a movie is capable of making an entire movie theater of people of all ages and backgrounds laugh at the same time at every joke, it must be considered one of the best movies in recent times. That is exactly how I would describe The Naked Gun. Hopefully, the success of this reboot pushes the franchise to continue exploring what happens next…mostly because we need more of Neeson and Anderson together onscreen.
