You're Cordially Invited (Stoller, 2025)

Oh, my goodness, she’s done it again, Reese Witherspoon has produced and starred in another film that brings nothing new to the screen. As soon as the film starts you start wanting it to end. Who is her co-star this time you may ask? Well, it’s Will Ferrell. The plot for this one? A wedding venue has accidentally double booked two weddings on the same day! Margot (Witherspoon) is the one party’s wedding planner – she did everything right – and Jim (Ferrell) is the father of the other wedding party – who’s wedding planner, a 20 something year old, didn’t even bother contacting the venue again after it was booked.

With a plot like this, usually only one thing happens, and it did. The two weddings must find a way to co-exist so both brides can have their happy day. Jim’s daughter Jenni (Geraldine Viswanathan) and Margot’s sister Neve (Meredith Hagner) are both side characters at their own weddings. Everything is completely taken over and made about Jim and Margot, and that is where the film is saved. As typical as it may be for the “wedding planners” to be at each other’s throats when weddings get double booked, they thankfully add some more to this war than just the expected – including a wild alligator.

I might be tearing this movie down more than necessary it felt like it was made too much for this generation of streamers. And that was Jim’s family and wedding party side. While Ferrell’s character himself added lively comedy and his chemistry – whether it be positive or negative – between himself and Witherspoon elevated the humour, his daughter and the bridal party were all too 21st century. Yes, it is 2025, and movies – especially movies made for direct to streaming – need to be made relevant for their general target audience, sometimes it is a bit too much.

Back and forth the film goes between Jim and Margot either getting along or trying to sabotage the other’s wedding. Without even remembering that they’re ruining it for the brides! Both Ferrell and Witherspoon’s past in comedy comes through in You’re Cordially Invited which can be the one saving grace for audiences. Competing against each other for glory, they end up competing in comedy as well.

Perhaps one day, though unnecessary, we may get a good wedding versus wedding movie, but for now You’re Cordially Invited (Stoller, 2025) is streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Feel free to watch it if you want, and if you don’t, you’re not missing much – except maybe an alligator.
